The Batman has cast one of its rogues for the upcoming film.

Paul Dano (There Will Be Blood) has joined the film as The Riddler, according to Deadline. He joins a cast that includes Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne/Batman, Jeffrey Wright as Commissioner Gordon, and Zoe Kravitz as Selina Kyle/Catwoman.

The news that Dano was cast as The Riddler came after the news that talks Jonah Hill, rumored favorite for the part, had broken down. Dano is known for his roles in Swiss Army Man, Escape at Dannemora, Love & Mercy, and made his directorial debut with 2018’s Wildlife.

The Riddler is also known as Edward Nigma, one of the many criminal masterminds of Gotham. He loves setting traps and tricks using riddles and puzzles, usually giving authorities the chance to solve them. Or else. Not a very talented fighter, he prefers using his mind to trap his opponents. Other actors known for playing him in live-action are Jim Carrey in 1995’s Batman Forever and Cory Michael Smith in the now ended Gotham.

The Batman has been described as a “grounded” take on the franchise. What that means, has yet to be seen, but it should be interesting. The film will be directed by Matt Reeves from a script co-written by Reeves and Mattson Tomlin.

The Batman will hits theatres on June 25, 2021.
