Taika Waititi is definitely a very busy man, but he always has that next project in the wings.
While he’s currently filming for his role in The Suicide Squad and with his latest film Jojo Rabbit garnering reviews, Waititi is definitely a person in demand in the industry.
His next directorial effort, Next Goal Wins, is eyeing Elisabeth Moss (The Handmaid’s Tale) for a part, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The film, which is based on a doc of the same name, is a sports dramedy that tells the story of the American Samoa national football (soccer for the US) team with their coach Thomas Rongen as they go from losers to FIFA qualifying. Michael Fassbender (X-Men franchise) has signed on to play Rongen.
Next Goal Wins will be the project that Waititi tackles before his Thor: Love & Thunder film, which is a follow-up to his 2017 Thor: Ragnarok. Waititi will co-write the script with Ian Morris.
Fox Searchlight will distribute the feature as they will with Jojo Rabbit. Waititi and Morris will produce along with Garrett Basch and Jonathan Cavendis. Andy Serkis will exec produce under the Imaginarium Productions banner.
Moss’ role at this time isn’t known. The rest of the cast has yet to be set.
Moss is best known for her role on Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale along with films such as Her Smell and The Kitchen. Her other projects in the works include The Invisible Man and The French Dispatch.
Next Goal Wins currently does not have a release date.
