It looks like Legally Blonde 3 may really be happening. While the film has not been officially greenlit, there’s hope on the horizon as Reese Witherspoon opened up a bit about what cast members she’d like to have back in the third film.
Speaking to ET Online, Witherspoon said, “I love Jennifer Coolidge and Luke Wilson and Selma Blair and so there’s so many great characters that people love. If we end up doing it, hopefully they end up all being there… It’s just a development project right now, so we’ll see.”
In case it’s been a while, Witherspoon played the cheerful, determined Elle Woods who went to Harvard Law to win back her boyfriend, realized he was trash, and discovered she’s actually a badass lawyer in her own right. Coolidge played one of Elle’s best friend’s Paullete Bonafonté, whose struggles with flirting led to the iconic “bend and snap” scene in the first film. Wilson was Emmett Richmond, Elle’s husband, while Blair played Vivian Kensington, who started out as Elle’s rival but later became a trusted friend and ally.
Although, as Witherspoon carefully noted, the project is still in development, she previously confirmed that there is a script. In January she told Entertainment Tonight, “[We have] a script, but we haven’t shot anything. [Elle’s] a very beloved character. You just want her to go on a hero’s journey like she does in the first movie, and I’m having a great time working on it.”
Not for nothing, Witherspoon looks like she hasn’t aged a day since Legally Blonde came out in 2001. A few years ago, she even showed off that she still fits into Elle’s dress and other costumes from the film!
