It’s the final countdown to the end of the Skywalker story. We are now officially less than two months away to the release of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker – the final film in the current Star Wars trilogy, and the final chapter of the nine film saga following three generations of force-strong Skywalkers – Anakin Skywalker, Luke Skywalker and Ben Solo.
As we go into the final episode, there are still so many questions that remain to be answered, and that we hope will be addressed in couple of hours of screen time. Does Ben Solo journey back from the Dark Side? Just who is Rey and what is her background? What will become of Leia? Do we lose Rey to the Dark Side? While we ponder these and many more questions, the final trailer for the Rise of Skywalker was released today (October 21), aptly on what would have been our Princess’, our General’s, Carrie Fisher’s 63rd birthday, and though she only makes a brief appearance in the trailer, it is certainly memorable and entirely fitting. Check it out below.
OMG!!! What a lot to process in just under 2 and a half minutes and this is just a taste of what we have to come when we sit in those darkened theatres in a few months. There is definitely a feeling of finality in the trailer, of coming full circle and having closure. From the beautifully haunting, slowed down version of the theme we all know so well, to the obvious taglines, this is the end of an era. However, it’s not over just yet. There’s plenty for us to celebrate, enjoy and fear.
The trailer had everything we wanted to see… our heroes, our villains, the Falcon leading the charge in the skies, and an epic battle between Rey and Kylo Ren
And then it delivered with some things we had hoped to see… our first look at Dominic Monaghan and Keri Russell (Zorri Bliss), the variety of new planets we have heard about, and the much hypothesised return of Emperor Palpatine seated on his ghostly throne.
Finally, there were the shocks we weren’t expecting… Finn popping up during Rey and Kylo Ren’s stormy showdown, Rey and Kylo Ren taking down together a black clad foe and is that the ruins of the second Death Star???
But what truly makes this the perfect trailer… a few simple seconds at the end. A close up of Rey’s face illuminated by the glow of her blue lightsaber and Mark Hamill’s Luke Skywalker’s voice over “The Force will be with you”, completed by Carrie Fisher as Leia’s “Always”. Cue goosebumps, chills and tears.
Along with the trailer, a new poster for the film (with Fisher given top billing) was released (see above) and tickets also went on sale around the world. Make sure you check out your local cinemas there are a number of events and special offers when you book your seats.
The film marks the return of J.J. Abrams as writer/director to the saga and stars Fisher, Mark Hamill, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Anthony Daniels, Naomi Ackie, Domhnall Gleeson, Richard E. Grant, Lupita Nyong’o, Joonas Suotamo, Kelly Marie Tran, Ian McDiarmid and Billy Dee Williams.
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is released on December 19 in Australia and December 20 in the UK and USA.
