At the D23 Expo, it was announced that Kit Harington was joining the cast of Marvel’s The Eternals. For the first time in a decade, he’ll share the screen with his Game of Thrones’ co-star, Richard Madden, and Madden is excited.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly at D23, Madden spoke about the on-screen reunion with Harington saying,  “It’s brilliant. It’s been about 10 years since we’ve worked together, I think. So we’ve moved on a bit onto different things, so I’m really excited to get back on set.”

Although Madden starred in HBO’s Game of Thrones until Robb Stark’s tragic end in season 3, he and Harington had not had any scenes together since episode 2 of season 1. Still, the show has bound together much of its cast over the years.

Harington is set to play Dane Whitman in The Eternals, who is one of the few non-Eternal characters in the film. That doesn’t make him less of a badass though. In the comics, Whitman inherits the mantle of The Black Night from his uncle and wields the powerful Ebony Blade, a sword enchanted by Merlin himself. As we know from Game of Thrones, Harington is adept at swordplay.

But how does Whitman relate to the Eternals? In the comics, he’s involved in a love triangle that includes the Eternal Sersi (who will be played by Gemma Chan). Her cousin is Ikaris, Madden’s character in the film.

As for how else Whitman may tie into the film and the MCU at large remains to be seen. reported back in September 2017 that hints at Whitman’s appearance were originally set to appear in Doctor Strange.

“It was [going to be in the movie],” explained propmaster Barry Gibbs. “That was going to go into a book called the Lexicon of Relics, but the Ebony Blade was taken out of the script. I don’t quite know why. Again, as things evolved, it wasn’t pertinent to the script. Things just moved on.”

Look for Whitman/Harington and Madden’s first appearances in the MCU when The Eternals hits theaters on November 6, 2020. Directed by Chloe Zhao, the film also stars Salma Hayek, Don Lee, Angelina Jolie, Barry Keoghan, Gemma Chan, Kumail Nanjiani, Lauren Ridloff, Brian Tyree Henry, and Lia McHugh.
