The pilot of one, as yet untitiled, Game of Thrones prequel is in post production and will definitely be hitting tv screens some time soon, but it’s another prospective spin off that’s raising interest for now.
This second possible prequel is to be based on Martin’s novel Fire And Blood, about the Targaryans.
Although this series is “moving closer to a pilot”, that doesn’t mean absolutely confirmed. However creator George R. R. Martin did drop the news in a recent blog post that if the series gets the go ahead dragons will definitely be featuring large.
Martin writes “I can say that there will be dragons. Everybody else has said that, so why not me?”
Moving closer to a pilot is not the same as getting a pilot order. Martin says “When HBO actually gives us a pilot order, you will hear me shouting it from the rooftops. A series order and I’ll be shouting even louder. But we’ll see. Right now all the signs are good, but nothing is confirmed.”
Martin says that even though, so far, there is no confirmed call for a pilot, the show has a script by Ryan Condal (Colony). “He’s a helluva strong writer and a huge fan of A Song Of Ice & Fire….”
The already piloted show, by Jane Goldman, is set thousands of years before Game Of Thrones, at a time when there are around a hundred petty kingdoms. The new prequel is set a mere 300 years before Game Of Thrones and focuses on the rise of the Targaryans.
Beginning with the legendary Aegon the Conqueror, creator of the Iron Throne, Fire And Blood recounts the long rise of the Targaryans and the generations of Aegon’s decendants who fought to hold the throne.
And of course, as Martin promises, there will be dragons.
