With Mr. Robot coming to end on USA, the network needs to find a new mind-bending, odd series with Sam Esmail. Luckily, they have it with their new anthology series Briarpatch.
Based on the Ross Thomas novel, the series follows Allegra Dill (Rosario Dawson) who has returned to her hometown in order to investigate the “explosive” murder of her sister. The first trailer for the series gets a little weird. Yes there are the usual elements of crime drama like car explosions, mysterious deaths, and corruption. Then there are the moments where zoo animals escape. No wonder the series promises a “wild ride through Saint Disgrace”.
While this began as an investigation turns into Allegra’s corrupt hometown to heel.
Check out the trailer below, which definitely gives a slightly odd vibe to the proceedings. It’s very well shot and definitely balances some humor with drama effectively.
The series will be executive produced by Esmail and written by Andy Greenwald (Legion). In addition to Dawson, the series as stars Jay R. Ferguson (Mad Men), Brian Geraghty (Chicago P.D.), Edi Gathegi (The Blacklist), Kim Dickens (Fear the Walking Dead), Alan Cumming (The Good Wife) and Ed Asner (Lou Grant).
The 10-episode series will debut in 2020, but the first two episodes will premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival this year on Sept. 7th.
