Iron Man is dead. For fans of the MCU, that hurts. However, we do have a long-awaited return for Robert Downey Jr in the future.
In 2009, he and Jude Law starred as Holmes and Watson in Sherlock Holmes. They returned for a sequel in 2011 called Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows. The movies are a lot of fun. Downey does an excellent job as Sherlock (that accent is amazing).
Fans have been waiting for years to see a third installment of the franchise. Of course, Downey had his commitment to the MCU and other projects. Law had his own stuff going on. It just never seemed like the right time.
Now that long awaited third movie took a huge step forward yesterday. According to Variety, Dexter Fletcher (Rocketman) will direct the third installment of the Sherlock Holmes franchise. Fletcher is taking over from Guy Ritchie, who helmed both previous films.
Downey and Law are expected to reprise their roles as Holmes and Watson in the third film. Chris Brancato (Narcos) will pen the script with Susan Downey, Joel Silver, Dan Lin and Lionel Wigram producing.
In Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, we had the traditional fake-out death for the character between him and his arch-nemesis Moriarty at Reichenbach Fall. In the moments before the movie ended, however, it was revealed that Holmes survived.
This is not the only Holmes film project in development. Legendary is developing a film based on the Enola Holmes books, which will star Millie Bobby Brown as the title character and Henry Cavill as Sherlock.
Sherlock Holmes 3 is slated for release on December 21st, 2021.
