It’s the return of two superstars to a giant film franchise. As Variety reported, Vin Diesel announced that Helen Mirren and Charlize Theron are set to return to the Fast & Furious franchise for the ninth film.
On Monday (July 8th), Vin Diesel himself shared the news of the return of Charlize Theron and Helen Mirren in an Instagram video from London.
Mirren and Theron will be joining the already confirmed actors: Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, Jordana Brewster, Tyrese Gibson, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges and Nathalie Emmanuel. John Cena joins the cast for the first time.
Both actresses have been part of previous Fast & Furious films. Charlize Theron will return as the cyberterrorist Cipher. She first portrayed this role back in 2017 in The Fate of the Furious. Helen Mirren joined the franchise in the role of Magdalene Shaw, the mother of Deckard Shaw, portrayed by Jason Statham, after cameoing in The Fate of the Furious. She will also star in Hobbs & Shaw, the first spin-off of the franchise, which will be released in August.
The Fast & Furious series started back in 2001. It started out with the story about an undercover cop and a street racing gang, becoming more dangerous, bigger and full of action with each chapter. It seems like the fascination for fast cars only grows over the time. Now, almost two decades and eight films later, it is one of the biggest film franchises with fans all over the world.
The filming for the new part of the series has been started three weeks ago. Justin Lin, who already directed four of films of the franchise, is back for the latest chapter.
Fast & Furious 9 will drop on May 22nd, 2020.
