The Little Mermaid may have found its Prince Charming. I’m sure every Directioner around the world is swooning in delight.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Harry Styles has entered early talks with Disney to star in the upcoming live-action adaptation of the 1989 film. Don’t mark the 25-year-old singer down as 100% on board yet, a source talking with Entertainment Weekly said that the talks were still “premature”.
Basically, it’s not a done thing.
If Styles joins the cast, it will be his second major acting role. He was in the 2017 Christopher Nolan film Dunkirk, which marked his acting debut. Disney has no comment on Styles’ casting at this time.
The lead role for the film went to 19-year-old actor and singer Halle Bailey, who is part of the R&B duo ChloexHalle and in Freeform’s grown-ish. Jacob Tremblay (Wonder), Awkwafina (The Farewell) and Melissa McCarthy (The Kitchen) have joined the film in the respective roles of Flounder, Scuttle, and Ursula.
In the original film, Prince Eric did not have many musical moments. He was a very pretty prince whose existence (and love at first sight) sparks Ariel to strike a bargain with Ursula that kicks off the events of the film. If Styles is being eyed, then hopefully that means Alan Menken and Lin-Manuel Miranda are planning to give this prince a vocal workout of his own.
There’s no release date for The Little Mermaid set at this time.
