The Barbie movie took an interesting turn today with indie darlings Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach announced to co-write the script for the film, according to Entertainment Weekly.
The duo previously collaborated on Mistress America and Frances Ha.
In addition to Gerwig and Baumbach penning the script, Gerwig is being eyed to direct the film, which will star Margot Robbie as the world’s most famous doll.
It’s definitely an interesting twist in the very long and strange journey to get the project made.
Previously, Amy Schumer and then Anne Hathaway were attached to star in the film under Sony. Eventually, the project went to Warner Bros where Robbie was attached to star and produce the project. At one point, Diablo Cody (Juno) was penning the script. It’s been in development since 2014.
Hopefully, Gerwig and Baumbach can crack the code for the Barbie movie. When Schumer was attached, the project was about an imperfect Barbie who leaves her life behind to make it in the real world. At this point, who knows what Gerwig and Baumbach’s version will focus on.
The duo, however, are busy with other projects as well. He’s working on an untitled Netflix project starring Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson. Gerwig, meanwhile, is finishing up her much anticipated adaptation of Little Women, which will star Emma Watson, Saoirse Ronan, and Meryl Streep.
The Barbie movie is currently untitled and without a release date.
