It’s surprising that Cats, one of the longest running musicals on Broadway, took until 2019 to get a film version. Granted, even as a musical theatre fan, I’m still not entirely sure what the musical is about other than, well, cats and T.S. Eliot poems.
Later this year, we are getting a film version of the 1981 (released on Broadway in ’82) musical. The cast is impressive: Taylor Swift, Jennifer Hudson, Idris Elba, Rebel Wilson, Jason DeRulo, James Corden, Ian McKellen, and Judi Dench are just some of the stars involved in the film.
Still we haven’t really seen much of the upcoming film, until today.
That’s right, we have the first look of the upcoming film. Granted, it’s mainly dance rehearsals for the cast, but it’s something. We also get a sense of the production design, which is overly large to make the actors look smaller.
In the interviews, the cast also share why the arts and performance are so important to them. It is pretty touching.
We won’t have our first trailer of the film until Friday, but it does look like the actors are having fun. As for the costumes? Tom Hooper, who directed the film version of Les Miserables, is digitally adding the fur to the actors in post. It’s hard to figure out if that’ll end up looking good or not. I suppose we’ll see Friday.
Check out the behind-the-scenes look below.
