What is it that people say? When you stare into the abyss, the abyss stares back? It looks like Brad Pitt is going to take a long, hard look at the abyss of space in the first trailer for Ad Astra.

The trailer follows Roy McBride (Pitt), an astronaut who is going to the outer edges of the solar system to find his long lost father (Tommy Lee Jones). His father disappeared two decades earlier after leaving Earth to search for aliens around Neptune. Rather than finding his dad, McBride may have discovered a mystery that threatens the solar system at large.

The secrets that McBride discovers could change perceptions of humanity’s place amongst the cosmos. So that’s going to be a wild ride, huh?

This project has been long gestating with writer and director James Gray, who compared the film to the novella Heart of Darkness.

It also stars Liv Tyler, Donald Sutherland, and Ruth Negga in supporting roles.

Check out the trailer below.

Ad Astra heads out to the black of space on September 20th.
