Reese Witherspoon Had To “Calm Down” During Her First Day With Meryl Streep On Big Little Lies

The first season of Big Little Lies had star power that included Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, and Laura Dern. But nothing compares to Meryl Streep, who joins the cast for season two and Witherspoon knows it.

On the first day of filming season two of the HBO series, Witherspoon was acting opposite Streep, who plays Mary Louise Wright, the mother-in-law of Kidman’s Celeste. She is in town to uncover the truth about her son Perry’s death. Spoiler for you, Mary Louise, he deserved it.

On Good Morning America, Witherspoon shared her trepidation about working with Streep, a three-time Oscar winner.

“The first day of the second season, I had to work with Meryl Streep — on the first day! — which is so exciting but also completely terrifying, and I think I barely got out words,” Witherspoon said. “She was like, ‘It’s okay.’ I had to literally go into another room and go, ‘Calm down, she’s just a person, she’s just a human being.’”

When Witherspoon was able to collect herself, she discovered Streep is, of course, awesome. “[She’s] so amazing, and she’s so self-effacing and lovely and humble, but you just can’t help but think of every single movie you’ve ever seen her in as you’re staring at her beautiful, gorgeous face.”

“[Meryl’s] got a great sense of humor,” Witherspoon continued. “She loves a dirty joke.”

Big Little Lies, based on the best-selling novel by Liane Moriarty, was initially shot as a single season mini-series. But after the massive success, critical acclaim, and 8 Emmy wins of the first season, HBO decided to do a second season. When we return to Monterey, CA, it’s only a few months after the shocking finale where Perry (Alexander Skarsgård) attacked Celeste and the other women came to her defense, leading to Perry’s death.

Now Celeste, Madeline (Witherspoon), Jane (Shailene Woodley), Bonnie (Zoe Kravitz), and Renata (Dern) are bound by the secret they all share. But as we saw at the end of season 1, the police aren’t buying their story, whatever it is. We never heard all of what the woman told investigators, though we can assume they claimed Perry slipped on the stairs and fell while ruthlessly beating his wife. His mom isn’t buying the story either and she’s out for answers.

Personally, I can’t wait to watch Madeline hurl an ice cream cone at Mary Louise.

Big Little Lies season two begins airing on June 9th.
