The USA Today best-selling novel, The Hating Game, is coming to the big screen! Like pretty much every other bestseller in the last few years, the Sally Thorne novel is getting the Hollywood treatment (not that I’m complaining!).
Pretty Little Liars star Lucy Hale will star as Lucy Hutton, the nice girl who refuses to finish last. Robbie Amell, known for his work on The Flash, will play her arch nemesis Joshua Templeman. The book has been adapted by Christina Mengert, and will be directed by Peter Hutchings. Hutchings most recently directed 2018’s Then Came You.
The Hating Game focuses on Lucy and Joshua’s interminable competition to outdo each other. The two share an office and will do just about whatever it takes to one-up the other. The game is “addictive, ridiculous, [and] never-ending.” As the game escalates, so does the attraction between the pair. When the tension finally comes to a head, Lucy questions everything she knows about Joshua. Most importantly, she questions if it is all part of the game.
“The Hating Game is a gloriously funny and sexy rom-com with a broad audience appeal,” said David Garett of Mister Smith Entertainment, which is co-financing the film.
The praise for Sally Thorne’s debut novel is widespread and it is easy to understand why. Who doesn’t love a workplace drama/rom-com? The novel has more than 12,500 reviews on Goodreads, with the majority of them in the four- and five-star range.
Personally, I am excited to see this casting news. I was always a fan of Hale in Pretty Little Liars and I am eager to see her work more in major motion pictures. Amell was great in When We First Met and is a great choice to lead a rom-com (hello, dream boat!).
No word yet on a production schedule or release date, but this adaptation is sure to be a hit with these two leading the way.
