Starring Christina Applegate and Linda Cardellini, Dead to Me is one of the newest shows created by Netflix. The show, which is a mixture of dark-comedy, tragedy, and mystery, comes from a very personal place.
Also, to be warned: spoilers ahead.
Creator, Liz Feldman opened up about the show’s humble beginnings—and the not so comedic parts of her own reality.
Prior to pitching the show, Feldman was dealing with her cousin’s recent passing in addition to going through fertility treatments.
We see many of Feldman’s personal experiences mirrored in the characters Jen and Judy: Jen’s (Christina Applegate) husband’s recent tragic passing and Judy’s (Linda Cardellini) five miscarriages.
These losses, though very different, bring Jen and Judy together at a grief support group, and the depth of their relationship is complex and dynamic, interwoven by shared loss and hidden secrets.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly about Jen and Judy’s bond, Feldman says, “What I will say is that it will be about the further exploration of this friendship, and relationship, and now very complicated dynamic, or even more complicated dynamic between these two women. But in the most basic way, the score has been evened. What I wanted to do was create a situation where they’re forced together, and they need each other now in some ways more than they did at the beginning of season 1.”
With the unveiling of these hidden secrets, Jen cuts Judy out of her life. The final scene of Dead to Me suggests the friends must rely on each other after Judy’s ex-boyfriend’s murder.
Steve (James Marsden), Judy’s ex, refuses to leave Jen’s property and she pulls at a gun—though we don’t see her shoot him.
In reference to ambiguity of who actually shot Steve, Feldman says, “One thing I can tell you is that everything is deliberate.”
That’s where season one ends. Netflix has not renewed Dead to Me for a second season yet, but Feldman says, if fans want one, they need to let Netflix know.
