David’s Leading A Cult In Trailer For Legion’s Final Season

Following a rather hit-and-miss season two, FX’s Legion is coming in with a psychedelic bang for its third and final season.

FX released a trailer for the highly anticipated season of the X-Men adjacent show, and boy, is it a doozy.  We rejoin David (Dan Stevens) and Lenny (Aubrey Plaza) in a cult led by David who claims to “open [the] minds” of his followers. He is the magic man, after all. Lenny is dressed as the Mad Hatter–in a look that suits her well–and the audience is treated to glimpses of new character Switch (Lauren Tsai) as well as a rebuilt Ptomony (Jeremie Harris) and other familiar characters.

Perhaps the most exciting glimpse we get in the trailer is that of Harry Lloyd’s take on Professor X. In a blink-and-you-miss-it shot, we see Lloyd as Xavier in a Cerebro prototype. In typical Legion fashion, things are not going well for Charles. Could David be using Xavier’s amplified powers against him? The audience will have to wait and see, but don’t count that out just yet.

This season of Legion will explore how David becomes the mutant Legion, the most powerful mutant this side of Phoenix and Jean Grey. As you’ll remember, the last season ended on a pretty divisive note. Amahl Farouk (Navid Negahban) convinced the entire Summerland crew, including Syd (Rachel Keller), that David had raped Syd following a disastrous attempt at capturing Farouk in the desert.

It was a morally ambiguous move and one that disgusted many audience members. This is a story that creator Noah Hawley wanted to tell and has had in the cards since the beginning. As anyone who has any idea about David Haller and Legion, they know that David is not a good guy.

It seems that in addition to telling his version of Professor X’s story, Hawley is sticking with David rising as an uber powerful supervillain and the crew of Summerland hunting him down. In true David fashion, he takes matters into his own hands and employs Switch to help him out. Whether he succeeds or not, we’ll have to wait to see.

Will David have a redemption arc or is he a bad guy now? Will Syd come to her senses and realize that she’s been manipulated by Farouk, the real bad guy of the show? Will David survive and what will happen to the rest of the Summerland crew and Lenny?

We’ll find all this out when Legion airs Monday, June 24th at 9/8c on FX.

In the meantime, check out the trippy trailer below and attempt to contain your excitement. Trust me on this, it’ll be a hard thing to do.
