Shazam Sequel Receives The Greenlight With Original Screenwriter Returning

Shazam! has started big with a healthy $53.5 million opening domestic weekend.

With Wonder Woman and Aquaman paving the way, it looks like DC Films has taken a new approach to their shared universe. (Is it still a shared universe? We’re not entirely sure about anything anymore.)

The film was genuinely charming with a stand-out performance from Zachary Levi. Certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes and largely positive reviews across the board, it’s unsurprising that a sequel is already in development.

According to The Wrap, the film officially got the greenlight after its strong box office start. They even have a writer attached for the project. Henry Gayden, who penned the original screenplay for the film, is set to return for the sequel.

While it is expected that director David F. Sandberg will return, nothing has been officially announced yet.

As for the direction of the sequel? Nothing is known yet. There was a post-credit scene in the film that showed Mister Mind (voiced by Sandberg), a caterpillar like creature with ambitions to rule the world. It would be cool to see Shazam and fam battle it out with Mister Mind and his Monster Society of Evil.

Of course, many fans are hoping to see the day when Billy Batson faces down the first champion, Black Adam (Dwayne Johnson). There’s a solo film in the works for the character. Let’s be real though, this is the fight we’re hoping to see.

Shazam! is currently in theatres. You can read our review here.
