Dave Bautista is getting out of the superhero game and into spying with the action-comedy My Spy. In the grand tradition of mismatched buddy comedies, it does look a little charming and pretty silly.
He’s a highly trained badass CIA operative! She’s a 9-year-old tried of bullies at her school! Together, they fight crime.
If you think that sounds silly, then you’re right. It is, but Bautista and newcomer Chloe Coleman (Big Little Lies) definitely bring their best in the trailer for My Spy. The trailer was unveiled at CinemaCon as part of STX Entertainment’s film line-up, which also includes Bad Moms’ Moms and, Bautista’s fellow Marvel superhero, Chadwick Boseman’s 21 Bridges.
The trailer for My Spy gives the low down on the upcoming movie. JJ (Bautista), badass spy, is surveilling the family of Sophie (Coleman) as part of an assignment. Sophie finds the cameras and because she is a precocious child, tracks him down. In exchange for not blowing his cover, she wants him to teach her how to be a spy.
Shennanigans, of course, ensue.
It’s pretty great. Bautista has had excellent comedic timing in the MCU as Drax the Destroyer, he brings that with him here. Coleman is definitely setting herself up as a young talent to watch.
