Disney is releasing three live-action versions of their popular animated films this year. In fact, two of these are at the peak of the 90s Disney Renaissance: Aladdin and The Lion King.
While we have had teaser trailers and TV spots, we haven’t had a full-length trailer from either film. As Aladdin will be released first, it got the first trailer out yesterday.
It looks gorgeous. We can kind of breathe a sigh of relief because Will Smith’s version of Genie does not look that bad in action. It was a valid concern for a quite awhile.
In the trailer, we see some iconic moments brought to life. Aladdin (Mena Massoud) runs from the palace guards. He sees Jasmine (Naomi Scott) in disguise in the market place for the first time. Genie and the Magic Carpet literally cut a rug while dancing together. All of it is in a lush and gorgeous setting, it’s just vibrant.
And we get to see “A Whole New World”. We die from squealing over it. It’s too perfect.
Based on the performances that we’re seeing in the trailer, we’re hopeful that the film will turn out pretty good. Though we have long since learned to reserve our judgement.
Take a look at the trailer below.
Aladdin will hit theatres on May 24th, 2019.
