Amazon Studio’s The Dark Tower series has officially found its star.
According to Deadline, Sam Strike (Nightflyers) has been cast in the lead role as the Roland Deschain a.k.a. The Gunslinger. The role was previously played by Idris Elba in the much maligned 2017’s The Dark Tower, which co-starred Matthew McConaughey as the Man in Black.
The TV series, based off Stephen King’s series, will take place years prior to the movie. It will follow the origin story of Roland: “how he first became a gunslinger and got his guns, his first conflict with the man in black, his first love and his first mission as a gunslinger.”
A second starring role was also cast. Jasper Pääkkönen (BlacKKKlansman) is believed to be playing a character called Marten, who Roland is sent out to kill. EW suggested that Pääkkönen could be playing the Man in Black/Martel Broadcloak/Randall Flagg.
At this time, however, everything is unconfirmed with Pääkkönen’s character.
While the TV series is a prequel to the books, the books follow an older Roland who is the last surviving member of the Gunslingers in Mid-World, which is coming apart at the seems. Roland is searching for the eponymous Dark Tower, which is said to be the nexus of all universes. Also searching for the Dark Tower is the Man in Black, who desires to claim the Tower for himself and become a god.
The series currently does not have a release date.
