It’s hard to imagine a world without Lord of the Rings. The high-fantasy series has been around for almost a century, yet it has shaped pop culture and the fantasy genre as a whole.

Given how the film adaptations have permeated mainstream pop culture, it’s amazing that it took us until 2019 to get a biopic on J.R.R. Tolkien. The man certainly led an interesting life.

In a recently released trailer for the project, we see how Tolkien’s (Nicholas Hoult) experiences in World War I shaped him into the man who penned one of the best-selling series of all time. The trailer is intercut with Tolkien’s wife Edith (Lily Collins) asking for her to tell her a story.

Tolkien promises her a story “about journeys”, “about fellowship”, and “magic beyond anything anyone has ever felt before”. It’s amazing how director Dome Karukoski can invoke the visual elements of Lord of the Rings in Tolkien’s life. It shows how such experiences could inspire a man to write an epic.

The title card has the “o” of Tolkien’s name looking the One Ring, which is honestly pretty perfect. If biopics aren’t your thing, then this looks like one you should check out. If you’re a Lord of the Rings fan, then definitely check this film out.

Or you can decide for yourself by watching the trailer below.

Tolkien will be released May 10th.
