With the controversy surrounding Bohemian Rhapsody, we’re already looking to the next music biopic to get the taste out of our mouth. Hopefully, Rocketman is here to fulfill all of those needs.
The latest full-length trailer for the feature shows follows Kingsman: The Secret Service‘s Taron Egerton as Sir Elton John in his early years. It tracks his development from shy piano prodigy Reginald Dwight into the international music superstar Sir Elton is today. From the trailer, it’s definitely dazzling (and we’re not talking about just the costuming). It also, smartly, focuses on a crucial period in Sir Elton’s life: the late 1960s to early 1970s.
Sometimes biopics can get a little overly ambitious in following their chosen subject, so this seems pretty smart.
Based off what we’re seeing in the trailer, it looks like Egerton will be a serious contender for the Academy Awards in 2020. (Though, we best get through this year’s ceremony before taking about next year. But can we also preemptively hand out costuming awards because damn.)
The film also stars Jamie Bell (Billy Elliot) as Elton’s longtime lyricist and writing partner Bernie Taupin, Game of Thrones‘ Richard Madden as Elton’s first manager, and Bryce Dallas Howard (Jurassic World) as Elton’s mother.
Rocketman hits theatres on May 31st.
