The cast of the upcoming spinoff/offshoot of Showtime’s Penny Dreadful just gained a Broadway favorite as part of its cast.

It was announced this week that Tony and Emmy Winner Nathan Lane will be joining the crew of Penny Dreadful: City of Angels. Lane is set to play Lewis Michener, a veteran officer in the LAPD, with Lewis becoming the partner and mentor of the lead Detective Tiago Vega, who will be played by Daniel Zovatto.

As far as what is known about the upcoming horror-drama series, City of Angels will be set in 1938 Los Angeles, “a time and place deeply infused with social and political tension.” When a grisly murder shocks the city, Det. Vega becomes embroiled in an epic story that reflects the rich history of Los Angeles. The series will be “deeply infused with Mexican-American folklore and social tension” and feature an “exciting mix of the supernatural and the combustible reality of the period, creating new occult myths and moral dilemmas within a genuine historical backdrop.”

Lane’s casting is the second major casting news recently announced about the upcoming series. Game of Thrones veteran Natalie Dormer was also revealed to be joining the cast as well. Dormer will be playing Magda, a supernatural demon who can take the appearance of anyone she chooses and manifests in a number of guises throughout the story.

With Lane joining Dormer, this show should definitely be on everyone’s radar as one to watch. Penny DreadfulCity of Angels is currently slated to start production later this year.
