It’s been eleven years since 27 Dresses first appeared. Recently, the cast—Katherine Heigl, James Marsden, Malin Akerman, and Edward Burns—gathered for a reunion.
As the cast chatted with the Entertainment Weekly, Heigl said that she’d love a sequel to 27 Dresses, one that focused on the characters of Jane, Kevin, Tess, and George.
Aline Brosh McKenna, writer of 27 Dresses—and also the co-creator of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend—is dedicated to creating a TV series based on the film, but her approach takes a different director.
McKenna recognizes that wedding culture is a beast of its own in an age of social media obsession.
Since 2008, the obsession with wedding culture has continued to grow. Between Pinterest boards, wedding hashtags, and DIY wedding blogs, the American wedding phenomenon can be a bit…much.
That’s sparked part of McKenna’s interest in creating a TV series based on 27 Dresses.
McKenna says, “I would love to do [a show] because I love that character and I think the ways in which you can sublimate your ego in this culture now are so extravagant. The craziness of the weddings and the amount of prep, all that stuff has only gotten crazier.”
While McKenna’s idea differs from Heigl’s desire for the 27 Dresses TV series sequel, it is clear that the writer and cast are invested in some sort of spin-off. As McKenna explained, she’s been working on the plan for at least two years now.
There may be hope yet for a 27 Dresses revival.
