There is good news spreading throughout the DC fandom today.
Aquaman has been officially given the green light for a sequel! Aquaman 2 will hit theatres on December 16th, 2022.
The sequel is definitely unsurprising for those who keep their eye on the box office receipts. Globally, Aquaman has made $1.1 billion dollars since its release in December 2018. This makes it the highest grossed DCEU film internationally. Domestically, the film made $335 million, putting it second behind 2017’s Wonder Woman in the States.
Critically consensus for the film was mostly positive as was the fan reaction. Given how lukewarm or bitter the critics and audiences tended to take to the previous DCEU films (Wonder Woman being the exception), it’s unsurprising that the Aquaman sequel is going forward.
Jason Momoa will return to star as Arthur Curry. Presumably Amber Heard will return as Mera. Though we don’t know if the other cast members will make their own returns to Atlantis as well.
Also uncertain, at this time, is director James Wan. Given the success of the first film, we think that Warner Bros and DC will like Wan to return to direct. Deadline previously reported that Wan’s frequent collaborator David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick will pen the sequel script. That definitely can only be a good sign for fans.
Aquaman will be released on Blu-ray on March 26th, 2019.
