C3PO Powers Down As Anthony Daniels Wraps Filming On Star Wars: Episode IX

For Star Wars fans, it is extremely hard to not think of Anthony Daniels when thinking about the space epic. For over forty years, Daniels has appeared in every single live-action Star Wars film, but his time in a galaxy far, far away could be coming to an end (at least for now) as he wraps filming on the upcoming final film in the latest trilogy, Episode IX.

Daniels is best known for being the man inside the protocol droid, C-3PO. Known the world over for his prissy speaking voice, adherence to the rules and a lover of both facts and languages, 3PO has travelled the galaxy with all our favourite heroes, in various states of completion and condition. However, now his time is up on Episode IX.

Taking to Twitter, Daniels shared with his fans that it was 3PO’s last day on Episode IX. Stating that the droid was “sad – but so am I”, he said that he was so proud to have worked with the cast and crew and that they’ll “miss everyone”. Having been well versed in keeping Star Wars secrets, he didn’t share any photos from his last day on set, but did tease fans letting them know that they have “been making something exceptional together”.

However, if I was Daniels I wouldn’t be putting that golden suit too far back in storage. After all, you never know what could happen in the Star Wars world and it seems as if many fans have similar thoughts if some of the responses to his post are to go by. Although just because he has said goodbye to 3PO doesn’t necessarily mean the end of his Star Wars run. He did appear as a human mine worker that was enslaved among the Wookiees in Solo: A Star Wars Story.

Very little is known about the film to date. We do not have a title, we haven’t had a teaser, and don’t look to the Super Bowl for providing us with some relief. Rumours abound that Disney will not be dropping a trailer on Super Bowl Sunday… though they are just rumours. It has been confirmed that both Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher will appear in the film as well as Billy Dee Williams returning as Lando Calrissian. They will be joined by Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong’o, Domhnall Gleeson, Kelly Marie Tran, Joonas Suotamo, and Billie Lourd. Making their first Star Wars appearance include Naomi Ackie, Keri Russell, and Richard E. Grant in unspecified roles.

April brings the Star Wars Celebration in Chicago. It’s at this fan event that we will likely get the first major new details about Episode IX. Luckily we are at the end of January then.

Star Wars: Episode IX hits cinemas December 20.
