He’s gone from being a young teenage heartthrob to seriously hot all over in the last few years, and now we don’t know how to react to the first pictures of Zac Efron in his role as infamous serial killer Ted Bundy.

The first image has been released along with the announcement that the film, Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Vile will have its world premiere at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival.  The festival takes place in January in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Efron also tweeted an image of himself:

The festival has a Premieres section, and it will be screened alongside Animals, Blinded By The Light, After The Wedding among others. Films that have premiered in this category in recent years include The Big SickCall Me By Your NameBoyhood, and Mudbound.

Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Vile is told from the point of view of Bundy’s longtime girlfriend, Liz, played by Lily Collins. Bundy sexually assaulted and murdered over 30 women during the 1970’s.  He was always described as charismatic and handsome, which is how he lured many of victims.

Efron, who is widely known for his role in High School Musical as well as The Greatest Showman, has always been seen as more of the lighthearted entertainer. He’s even taken on comedic roles in Neighbours (released outside the US as Bad Neighbours to avoid confusion with a popular Australian soap opera) as well as Baywatch.   This role will certainly be a departure for the 31 year old actor.

Directed by Joe Berlinger with a script by Michael Werwie, the film has yet to be given an official release date.  It also stars  Haley Joel Osment, Kaya Scodelario, John Malkovich, and Jim Parsons.

The 2019 Sundance Film Festival runs from January 24th through February 3rd.
