Nia Nal (Nicole Maines) has been a welcome addition to Supergirl‘s fourth season.
Kind and sweet with a spine of steel, Nia is one of our new favorite characters for the series. We can’t wait to see her go on her journey for becoming a hero. Also to continue her valiant fight to flirt with Brainiac-5 (Jesse Rath), who just does not understand what the poor girl is doing here.
Nia is also the first transgender superhero on television and the first trans lead on an Arrowverse show. Maines has been killing it on all fronts so far.
It looks like we’re going to learn more about Nia and her homelife as well.
According to Deadline, Supergirl has cast Hannah James (Mercy Street) and Kate Burton (Scandal). They will be playing Nia’s older sister, Maeve, and mother, Isabel, respectively.
Maeve Nal is described as “driven and focused on maintaining the Nal family’s rich legacy. She and Nia have a strong sisterly bond, although Maeve has always had to work harder to achieve what comes naturally to Nia.”
Isabel Nal is described as “the warm and nurturing mother of Nia Nal, is a local hero in her own right. She is a wise and generous matriarch and has raised her family to be bold and courageous, as well as to love fiercely and openly.”
So it sounds like Nia had some good support when she began transitioning. Honestly, it’s nice to see that for a trans character on television.
Supergirl airs Sundays at 8/7c on the CW.
