Fans of Deborah Harkness’ All Souls Trilogy have received some much needed good news this week. Although its only been screened in the UK to date, the 8-episode series A Discovery of Witches, based on the first novel of the same name in the Trilogy, has been greenlit for a second and third season. So we’re in for plenty more intrigue, magic, mischief and secrets.

Last week saw the conclusion to the stunning first season with witch Diana Bishop (Teresa Palmer) and vampire Matthew de Clairmont (Matthew Goode) escaping their pursuers in a way only a truly gifted witch can achieve. With so many questions left unanswered and a brilliant cast and production, it is no surprise that they are all coming back for more and to continue the trilogy.

A Discovery of Witches tells the story of Diana, a powerful witch and historian, who is only now discovering the true extent of her powers following her retrieval of a magical book, rumoured to contain secrets about witches, vampires and daemons – including their origin, but thought lost within the vaults of Oxford University’s Bodleian Library. Her accessing the tome alerts the magical folk and puts Diana’s life at risk as everyone vies to claim it. Among these folk is fellow professor Matthew de Clairmont, a geneticist who is working on tracking the bloodlines and DNA of witches, vampires and daemons. Thrown into Diana’s path, it doesn’t take long for their mutual attraction to simmer over. The only problem is that interspecies relationships are forbidden, bringing more trouble down on their heads.

The UK’s SkyOne made the announcement with the following Twitter post:

Harkness also celebrated the news, taking to Facebook where she posted:

“In case you missed the amazing news: A DISCOVERY OF WITCHES will be returning for a second AND third series on Sky One, Sundance Now, NOW TV, and Shudder.

The enormous success of the show in the UK and Europe has made it possible for future seasons to be greenlit and go into production. The writers are already hard at work to produce scripts so that we can cast and shoot season 2 next year. Elizabethan London, here we come!

Thank you to all our loyal viewers on the UK and territories covered by HBO Europe. Now we pass the baton to viewers in Spain, Portugal, New Zealand, Australia and the US who will be seeing the show in the next few months.”

Season 1 will premiere in the US on January 17 2019 on Sundance Now and Shudder.
