Things take a turn for the unusual, even by Doctor Who‘s standards, during this week’s episode. After giving us quite the creepy episode last week with the spiders, we are introduced to a creature that is quite possibly the cutest “monster” The Doctor has ever had to face (just picture a Stitch looking gremlin of sorts).
That being said, things still got a bit emotional as The Doctor and her friends tried to do their best help some very unusual people for sure, while learning to continue to grow as a group and learn from their mistakes.
Gather ’round and let us discuss “The Tsuranga Conundrum.”
Strange Bedfellows: While exploring on an alien junkyard planet, the Doctor, Graham, Yasmin and Ryan find themselves caught in a sonic mine’s detonation. They later wake aboard the Tsuranga, an automated ship traveling to a medical space-station. While checking out their new surroundings, The Doctor meets some of the patients being transported – Eve Cicero, a renowned general; her brother Durkas; Eve’s synth robot partner Ronan; and Yoss, a pregnant man (yes you read that right).
Danger Ahead: While trying to figure out what is going on, The Doctor and the head nurse Astos manage to gain access to the ship’s systems and notice something heading for the ship. Both of them realize that it is an alien entity that is currently damaging the ship’s escape pods because it too also has access to the ship’s systems. Astos becomes trapped in one that he is inspecting, and dies when the pod is jettisoned into space and explodes.
No P’Ting Around: After Astos’ unfortunate death, more is discovered about the strange entity that is slowly taking over. Mabli, Astos’ colleague, tells the the Doctor that the entity is a P’Ting, a creature that eats non-organic material and is classed as highly dangerous (as most things in space are). On the flip side, it totally adorable looking. Silver lining? The Doctor however learns that the ship will be remotely detonated if the space-station detects the creature aboard and works diligently to stop this from happening.
Teamwork Makes The Dream Work: To stop all hell from breaking loose, the group splits up. While Yasmin and Ronan defend the ship’s anti-matter power source from the P’Ting, Ryan and Graham offer to help Mabli with Yoss as he enters labour. Yoss confesses to the pair that he’s not really wanting to be a dad; Ryan ends up making him feel better by telling him that he just needs to be there for his kid as it makes all the difference in the world.
A Heartbreaking Secret: Elsewhere, the Doctor, Eve and Ronan focus on gaining manual control of the ship. While working with the pair, the Doctor sadly learns that Eve has a critical heart condition that could kill her should she try to interface with the neuro-interfaces of the ship, and lied to her brother about what she was suffering from. Despite this and after having one tear-inducing heart to heart with her brother, Eve bravely sacrifices herself to pilot the ship through a dangerous asteroid field as a shortcut to the space-station while protecting those aboard the ship. Durkas assumes control in her place after her passing.
Trick And Treat: After Eve’s death, The Doctor comes to the conclusion that the P’Ting is actually being drawn to the energy source as a source of food ( I mean, which makes sense since it ate the Sonic Screwdriver). The Doctor also believes that there must be a bomb attached to the ship’s power source as a failsafe device, which turns out to be right. The Doctor ends up finding the bomb and removing it. She also manages to trick the P’Ting into eating it, ensuring that the energy of the blast feeds the creature before jettisoning it out into space.
All’s Well That Ends Well: After all that, the Tsuranga finally and safely arrives at the space-station, as Ryan and Graham help Yoss with his labour to produce a healthy baby, which he ends up naming after an Earth hero from his people’s textbooks in his new friends’ honor. . The Doctor then joins Mabli and the patients in honouring the death of Eve for her courage in protecting them before setting off to recover the TARDIS.
Doctor Who continues to give us new things love about Thirteen and her companions as it delivered another stellar episode. It truly is becoming one of the most well rounded season’s of the series so far.
