It looks like the Birds of Prey has officially rounded out its main cast.
According to Variety, newcomer Ella Jay Basco has joined the female-led film as Cassandra Cain. The film will star Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Huntress, Jurnee Smollett-Bell as Black Canary, Rosie Perez as Renee Montoya, and Ewan McGregor as the Black Mask. Cathy Yan is directing with a screenplay Christina Hodson.
The film’s plot is as follows: Harley, Huntress, and Black Canary “team up to protect Cain’s character when she comes across a diamond belonging to McGregor’s Black Mask, a kingpin in Gotham City’s criminal underworld.”
Now, in the comics, Cassandra is the daughter of assassins David Cain and Lady Shiva. She was raised without speech or human contact throughout her childhood. This made her effectively mute, but also an expert in body language. She made a vow to never kill after seeing a man die in front of her. Eventually, Cain would fall into the company of Bruce Wayne and would become Batgirl with Barbara Gordon’s blessing.
It’s unknown how connected the Batgirl project Warner Brothers is developing will be to this film. The fate of the shared DC Universe is kind of up in the air.
Birds of Prey will hit theatres on February 7th, 2020.
