Hamilton alum Anthony Ramos is having a good run of things after exiting the insanely smash hit musical. (He played John Laurens/Phillip Hamilton during his tenure.) He recently had a role in A Star Is Born as Ally’s (Lady Gaga) best friend.
Now, he’s uniting with Lin-Manuel Miranda again.
According to Variety, Ramos will star in a film adaptation of In The Heights. Ramos will play Usnavi de la Vega, which Miranda originated on Broadway, a bodega owner who dreams of moving from Washington Heights to the Dominican Republic.
The 2008 Best Musical Tony winner follows the residents of the largely Latino Washington Heights as they aspire to better lives while gentrification takes hold. During a sweltering summer blackout, things in the neighborhood begins to come to head. In addition to bodega owner Usnavi, there’s college student Nina, taxi dispatcher Benny, salon worker Vanessa, and neighborhood matriarch Abeula Claudia.
Crazy Rich Asians directorJohn M Chu is on board to direct from a script from Quiara Alegría Hudes.
Warner Brothers had won the bid to make the film following the dissolution of the Weinstein Company after the allegations of Harvey Weinstein came to light.
In The Heights is set for release on June 26th, 2020.
