I love TV immensely, and if you get me started on my favorite shows, I won’t shut up; however, my love for Crazy Ex-Girlfriend far exceeds my adoration for any other TV show in current contemporary culture.

When the show first premiered in October 2015, I was sold. It has everything I love in one amazing TV show: feminism, subversive topics, musical theater numbers, witty humor and repertoire, vibrant characters, and a strong female lead.

To this day, I openly advocate for this highly underrated TV show, and I’m sad that on Friday, October 12th, 2018 at 9 pm ET, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend will be premiering its final season.

When we were last left with our “crazy” lead Rebecca Bunch (Rachel Bloom, co-producer and star), she was admitting to her past crimes and pleading guilty to murder in court. Romantic lead, Nathaniel Plimpton (Scott Michael Foster) urges her to plead guilty by insanity, and while tempting, Rebecca refuses to do so.

Entertainment Weekly provided an exclusive first-look at the season four premiere, and of course, it’s a musical number.

In the musical number, Rebecca is taking on her version of the “Cell Block Tango” from Chicago, which she calls, “What’s Your Story?”

In a previous interview with EW, Bloom said, “I’m doing a high schooler performing their idea of ‘Cell Block Tango.’”

As Rebecca attempts to navigate life in prison and force camaraderie with her fellow inmates, it becomes evident that her idea of penance is by choice, not by legal jurisdiction. While performing the song, she realizes just how sad the inmates’ stories are, and how their lifestyles are immensely different from her own.

But in Crazy Ex-Girlfriend tradition, the difficult storylines are easily paired with humor and satire. Don’t forget to catch the final season’s premier on October 12th at 9 pm ET.
