Something Wicked this way comes as an early Halloween treat for fans of Broadway musicals and could quite possibly be the best announcement all week.
Today brings us the news that the original stars of the legendary Wicked will be giving us a reunion of sorts to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the Broadway hit. Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth are set to make their returns as Oz citizens and former friends Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West, and Glinda, the Good Witch of the North, for a special tribute concert.
The concert will be broadcast on NBC on October 29 and feature songs from the musical with performances from the two actresses in their original roles. Also joining Menzel, who picked up a Tony for her turn as Elphaba during the show’s original Broadway run, and Chenoweth will be the Broadway production’s current company and special guests like Ariana Grande and Pentatonix. More stars are expected to be announced as far as joining the tribute concert is concerned.
NBC released the following statement with regards to the announcement of the anniversary special concert. “Wicked is a blockbuster musical playing all over the world and still selling out night after night after 15 years on Broadway, and we’re thrilled to be partnering with Emmy and Tony-winning producer Marc Platt and the entire WICKED team to celebrate the enduring success of this show,” said Doug Vaughan, Executive Vice President, Special Programs and Late Night, NBC Entertainment in a press release. “We’re especially excited to have Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth reunited along with big guest stars in front of an audience — in costume hopefully — to help us celebrate the Halloween season.”
Fans of the show Wicked have been clamoring for years for a reunion of the original cast and even for a movie. This concert will undoubtedly be a dream come true, especially for those who haven’t been able to make the trek to Broadway just yet to see the show on the big stage.
