Birds of Prey has finally expanded its cast!
Yesterday (Wednesday, September 26th), it was announced that Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Jurnee Smollett-Bell have joined the anticipated, female hero centric film. Margot Robbie has previously been confirmed as Harley Quinn in the project, which Cathy Yan will direct.
In the upcoming film, Winstead will play Huntress and Smollett-Bell will play Black Canary. Black Canary is traditionally a white character in comics, but DC Entertainment and Warner Brothers focused on diverse actors to reflect the movie-going audience.
Smollett-Bell is best known for her television work on WGN’s Underground, True Blood, and Friday Night Lights. She has an upcoming role in the HBO series Lovecraft Country, which hails from Jordan Peele and JJ Abrams. Winstead has a wide array of film and television credits, including Final Destination 3, FX’s Fargo, and the upcoming Ang Lee film, Gemini Man.
In the comics, Black Canary is an expert fighter and metahuman with the ability to let loose an ultrasonic scream known as her “canary cry”. She has been part of the Birds of Prey in several iterations. Recently, the Arrowverse has had several woman hold the title: Sara Lance (Caity Lotz), Laurel Lance (Katie Cassidy), and, currently, Dinah Drake (Juliana Harkavy).
Huntress, meanwhile, is a skilled hand-to-hand combatant who often uses a crossbow. There are two characters in DC Comics that use the name. First is Helena Bertinelli, a daughter of a mob boss who eventually turned against her family. The other is Helena Wayne, the daughter of Bruce Wayne and Selena Kyle (Catwoman), who followed her father into heroing. Bertinelli is traditionally the member of the Birds of Prey. We’re just mentioning Wayne because who knows? Maybe DC and Warner Bros will mess with our minds.
The traditional trio of the Birds of Prey is missing Barbara Gordon aka Oracle, who runs the operations from the Gotham Clock Tower. Fingers crossed that we’ll officially get Babs soon. Her name was missing from the roster, but, like, they can’t do the Birds of Prey without her.
Other characters rumored to appear in the film are Batgirl Cassandra Cain and Gotham Detective turned The Questin, Renee Montoya.
Birds of Prey hits theatres on Feb. 7, 2020.
