In November 2016, a new era for the Wizarding World started when Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them hit theatres. Audiences were introduced to Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) on a wild night as he tried to collect his accidentally freed creatures in Wizarding America. It was a time where almost everyone wanted to have a Niffler.

One question a lot of people asked after the film: Who is Leta Lestrange (Zoe Kravitz)? The young woman is only mentioned in passing and there’s a brief glimpse of a picture of her. Newt mentions that he has known her from school, but that’s it.

From time to time, fans got more information about the half-sister to the tragic Credence Barebone (Ezra Miller). In a recent interview, Kravitz has shared a little bit more of her character, especially in regard to the Scamander brothers.

On her relationship with Newt, Kravtiz said, “[Newt and Leta are] friends from childhood when they went to Hogwarts. They have quite a special bond and she was always looked at as an outcast, just as Newt was. Now he’s come back into town and learns she’s become engaged to his brother, Theseus [Callum Turner], so that’s an awkward situation.”

So that’s Leta’s story. She’s engaged to her childhood friend’s brother. Some people had hopes on a love story between Leta and Newt. Let’s hope that they will not be too disappointed as it’s been confirmed that the pair were only friends.

“I don’t think it ever went to that place. But Newt has so few friends and connections in his childhood, maybe in his mind it might have gone there? I don’t think it was ever acted upon. But it still feels like a betrayal,” said Kravitz.

Kravitz also describes her character as “compassionate person, especially towards Newt”, but also as “a powerful person”.

It will certainly be interesting to see how characters from the first film will react to her.

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes Of Grindelwald will premiere in theaters on November 16th, 2018.
