This Is Us is keeping things in the family, the NBC family that is, as far as casting goes. Season 3’s premiere is just right around the corner, and one of the season’s teased big events just completed very important casting as it has found the actor that will take on the role of the family patriarch Jack’s brother.

Will & Grace alum Michael Angarano is joining the cast in a recurring role as Nicky, the brother of Jack Pearson. eries creator Dan Fogelman told Deadline last month that the series will be “diving heavy” into patriarch Jack’s experience in Vietnam in Season 3, which will include Nicky’s death.

This isn’t the first time that Nicky has been on the show. In previous episodes, flashbacks have shown what Nicky looked like as a child and even a photo shared has given viewers a glimpse about Nicky’s time in the service.  The group photo of US servicemen from Vietnam with Nicky alongside Jack served a tragic purpose as it was revealed that Nicky had been killed in the war.

This upcoming arc should not come as a surprised to viewers as in the final seconds of the Season 2 finale, Jack’s son Kevin, along with his girlfriend Zoe, were shown to be catching a flight to Vietnam to learn more about Jack’s time there.

The show is also going above and beyond with this particular storyline. Renowned Vietnam journalist and author Tim O’Brien is being brought on as a consultant to provide authenticity in the actors’ portrayals of the war.

Sounds like fans everywhere better stock up on more Kleenexes as this storyline will be a doozy.

This Is Us returns with its Season 3 premiere on Tuesday, September 25 on NBC.
