There is no doubt that Netflix’s The Crown is one of the most popular shows on the streaming platform. A large part of this is probably due to the stellar performances of Claire Foy and Matt Smith, who portray Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip respectively.
Obviously, fans were surprised and shocked when it was announced that the two actors, along with the rest of the cast, will be replaced in seasons three and four. The reason for this has nothing to do with their performances, but simply down to the creator of the show wanting to keep it real and due to their characters advancing age, the actors are just too young-looking.
In the past few months since the release of season two, we found out that Olivia Colman will take over the crown from Claire Foy and Tobias Menzies will play Prince Philip. Helena Bonham Carter will also be joining the cast as Princess Margaret. As will Ben Daniels who will be playing Lord Snowdon.
In July production started on the third season and quite surprisingly, Netflix released first images of Olivia Colman, Helena Bonham Carter and Ben Daniels as their characters and only captioned them with one word each: “Patience”, “Hope”, and “Hurt”, respectively.
However, one of our favorite royals was left out, as there has not been an image of Tobias Menzies as Prince Philip.
Well until now!
On their official Twitter page, The Crown has released the first picture of Tobias Menzies as Prince Philip in the third season, captioning it with the word “Ambition,” which most likely will relate to the Duke of Edinburgh in season three.

If anyone had any doubt about Menzies playing the Duke of Edinburgh, I am quite confident their doubt was thrown out the window by the picture. It’s astonishing how alike he is to Prince Philip – he truly became the older (or younger) version of the Queen’s consort!
It also makes me want to see season three asap! Sadly, however, we will probably have to wait until next year for the upcoming season to premiere.
