We may never get that Star Wars–Doctor Who crossover of our dreams, but this is probably the closest we’ll get to it.
According to Variety, Matt Smith has joined the cast of Star Wars Episode IX. Smith is best known for playing the Eleventh Doctor on Doctor Who and a young Prince Philip on the first two seasons of The Crown.
Whether Smith’s character in on the side of the Rebels or the First Order is anyone’s guess. It is some kind of key role. Except the people actually filming the movie, which is currently in production in London.
Smith’s fellow newcomers in the final entry of the latest Star Wars trilogy are Keri Russell, Richard E. Grant, Dominic Monaghan, and Naomi Ackie. Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, and Adam Driver will reprise their roles from the previous two films. Billy Dee Williams will reprise his role as Lando Calrissian. The late, great Carrie Fisher will also appear in the upcoming film. Mark Hamill will also reprise as Luke Skywalker.
JJ Abrams, who directed Star Wars: The Force Awakens, returns for Episode IX. He and Chris Terrio co-wrote the script.
Star Wars Episode IX hits theatres December 20th, 2019.
