It looks like we will shortly get to see Laura Dern teaming up with Meryl Streep on the big screen and our TV screens and we couldn’t be happier. Streep has already started filming the second season of the HBO series Big Little Lies, which is bringing back original stars Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon, Shailene Woodley, Zoe Kravitz and Dern. However, it appears that Dern will also join Streep in a big screen adaptation of an American classic.
Lady Bird writer/director Greta Gerwig has turned her sights to Louisa May Alcott’s American Civil War story, Little Women and Dern is just the latest in a long line of A-list stars that she has gathered round her for the production reports The Hollywood Reporter.
Streep has signed on to play the March girls’ wealthy, hard-to-please aunt, Josephine March, while Emma Stone, Florence Pugh, James Norton, and Gerwig’s Lady Bird stars – Saoirse Ronan and Timothee Chalamet are in talks to star in the project. Though they have not officially signed on, there’s talk that Stone would take on the sweet, beautiful eldest sister Meg, Ronan would be the boisterous Jo, with Pugh the vain baby of the family Amy. Chalamet can easily be envisioned as the attractive, charming next door neighbour Laurie. If Dern signs on, she would be the perfect Marmee.
Set in Massachusetts during the American Civil War, Little Women follows the four March sisters – Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy – as they deal with growing up and coming out into the world, the changing roles for women due to wartime, an absent father off at war and the highs and lows of young love.
This is not the first time that Columbia has produced an adaptation of the novel. Their last version was 1994’s film by Gillian Armstrong that also had an all-star cast: Winona Ryder as Jo, Kirsten Dunst as Amy, Claire Danes as Beth, Susan Sarandon as Marmee, Christian Bale as Laurie, and Gabriel Byrne as Professor Bhaer.
