SDCC 2018: We Are Venom

One of the highly anticipated panels at SDCC this year was for Sony’s Venom.

Venom is an extremely popular character in the Marvel universe and he is also one of the most interesting; it’s only fitting that he would get his own film.

The film is bound to be pretty dark considering the director, Ruben Fleischer, told the audience there will be no heroes in this film. However, I’m not sure star Tom Hardy, who plays Eddie Brock/Venom (the symbiote who invades Brock’s body), would agree to calling him a villain as he called him a superhero during the panel.

I think anti-hero or morally grey character is what you’re going for, Hardy.

At the panel Hardy expanded on this saying, “[Eddie Brock’s] ethical structure is really off… but he believes in doing the right thing… He’s got a true and noble heart.”

Riz Ahmed was also on the panel. He stars as Dr. Carlton Drake who is the creator of the symbiote.

When filming Venom Hardy revealed that he had to have an earpiece giving him Venom’s dialogue in his head so that he could properly time his reactions with the voice and the other actors in the scene.

Apparently it was a sight to behold on set.

While there may be no actual heroes in Venom you can certainly bet there will be bigger and badder villains. One of them is another symbiote named Riot. In the footage shown at SDCC it looks as though Ahmed’s character is Riot – at least at one point anyway.

This is Venom’s biggest nemesis but that doesn’t necessarily mean he will be the only villain in the film – it was hinted we would see another villain but everyone was pretty hush hush about it.

When asked about a possible battle between Spider-Man and Venom in the future Ruben let it slip that he believes Sony is trying to get that done because, let’s be real, who wouldn’t want that?

It also lead to this hilarious reaction from Hardy:

Venom looks like it’s going to be amazing, and while the kick ass footage from SDCC isn’t available online, just watch the trailer again because it’s just that great.
