After giving us one crazy season last year, AMC’s Preacher returned to San Diego Comic Con to break down some of last season’s biggest moments. The cast of the hit drama series also teased what we can expect in this season, which is currently airing.

For those who may not know much about Preacher, the show tells the story of Jesse Custer, a hard-drinking, chain-smoking preacher who, enduring a crisis of faith, becomes infused with an extraordinary power. He embarks on a quest to better understand his new gift and literally find God, alongside his trigger-happy ex-girlfriend, Tulip, and new vampire friend, Cassidy.

Dominic Cooper, Ruth Negga, Joseph Gilgun, Seth Rogen, Sam Catlin, and Evan Golberg were on hand at the convention to provide some insight on all the craziness that went down last season. They also discussed how the dynamics of the show have changed, especially with the core team as they are now separated in their respective journeys.

Among the items discussed was the introduction of John Wayne as a character. Many fans thought the character was going to be introduced in the first season but Rogen had a very good explanation as to why they waited until now. “I thought there was too much weird shit in the first season that I thought did we really need the main character to have John Wayne as his imaginary friend too?” shared Rogen.

Cooper also shared some of his character Jesse’s struggles this season as he is “pushing his friends away in order to save them” and how that is coming off as “a selfish act but he needs them to understand that they matter to him.”

Preacher‘s third season is currently airing on Sunday nights on AMC.
