Draco Malfoy and Nymphadora Tonks are stranded in space together in a new original series from YouTube. Ok, so it’s actually Tom Felton and Natalia Tena but you get the idea.
Launching this Fall on YouTube Premium, Origin is an intergalactic space thriller set in the future where the advanced human race is given the opportunity to start over on a new planet. If you’re looking to escape your past, your crimes, or give yourself a new beginning, then another planet seems like the best option. At least on paper.
During their journey, a handful of people are accidentally stranded in space, light years from Earth or the new home planet they were headed for. They appear to have been abandoned by the other colonizers and the crew of their spaceship. What began as a journey to brand new start, has now become a fight to simply survive.
YouTube Premium is likely looking to compete with Netflix series Altered Carbon and Lost in Space. It may also be taking a few cues from Paul Thomas Anderson’s 1997 sci-fi/horror film, Event Horizon. That is fitting as Anderson serves as the director for Origin as well.
At the Comic-Con panel, series creator Mika Wika Watkins confessed she referred to Felton as “Draco” throughout the entire series shoot. She also commented on what type of show Origin is, saying, “I don’t think Origin isn’t just one thing. It’s many different things. I wouldn’t write a space show that was exclusively [showing] people on a ship.”
Although the bulk of the show will take place on the spaceship, Anderson said around 40 percent of the show will be flashbacks to provide backstory for each of the characters and their actions prior to boarding the ship. Not everything will be as dark or scary as the trailer suggests.
“At the heart, it’s a series about broken people who want a fresh start but instead of a fresh start, they wake up and they’re alone,” said Anderson. “These people who wanted a fresh start instead get put in a vice. It squeezes and squeezes them… We as an audience get to see if they crack or not.”
The 10-episode series stars Felton and Tena. They are joined by Sen Mitsuji, Nora Arnezeder, Fraser James, Philipp Christopher, Nina Wadia, Madalyn Horcher, Siobahn Cullen, Adelayo Adedayo and Wil Coban.
Anderson will also serve as executive producer alongside producers of The Crown and Outlander.
Origin will air exclusively on YouTube Premium, the subscription service that offers access to YouTube Original series and movies. It also acts as a streaming music platform and provides subscribers with uninterrupted, ad-free viewing across all of YouTube.
