Space enthusiasts were out in force at Comic Con last week and many of them packed into Room 7AB for a panel on National Geographic’s second season of Mars called “When Earthlings Become Martians.”

Those in attendance at the panel received an exclusive first look at the new trailer for season two. Check it out below. Season two premieres on Nov. 12, 2018.

A fantastic group of panelists was on hand to discuss not only season two but also our future on The Red Planet (see the group selfie below). The panel included former NASA astronaut Leland Melvin; Dr. Stephen Petranek, award-winning author of How We’ll Live on Mars; Andy Weir, bestselling author of The Martian; Susan Wise Bauer, historian and author of the History of the World series; cast members Jihae and Jeff Hephner, and series showrunner and executive producer Dee Johnson. The session was moderated by author and contributor Jennifer Kite-Powell.

Based on Dr. Petranek’s book, Mars is a hybrid series with dramatized portions interwoven with interview segments and documentary sequences with real scientists and “big thinkers,” such as Neil deGrasse Tyson, Bill Nye, Elon Musk, and Weir. Mars is produced by Ron Howard and Brian Graze. It also stars Alberto Ammann, Clémentine Poidatz, and Esai Morales.

As the prospect of colonizing the planet becomes a more legitimate prospect, the series explores the reality of colonization on another planet and whether humanity would repeat the same mistakes we’ve made on Earth. In addition, there are major questions to answer about the repercussions of terraforming Mars and attempting to create a living, manageable, and growable civilization there.

The six episodes of season two will dig deeper into the everyday challenges awaiting humans on Mars, including Martian-born babies, surviving the common cold, and efforts to exploit and/or commercialize the planet’s resources.
