DC and Marvel films can have some actor overlap. Usually, however, there’s several years between the actors being in one before appearing in the other.
Not today, apparently!
According to Entertainment Weekly, Djimon Hounsou has been cast as the wizard Shazam in the 2019 film Shazam! In the comics, the 3,000 sorcerer hails from Ancient Egypt and searched for a successor to carry on his legacy. He’s also the Guardian of the Rock of Eternity and bestows upon young Billy Batson (played by Asher Angel) great powers to turn him into an adult hero (played by Zachary Levi).
Hounsou has played the Kree mercenary Korath the Pursuer in 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy. He will reprise his role in 2019’s Captain Marvel.
It’s funny that he was cast in this because for the longest time Billy Batson’s adult form was known as Captain Marvel. It was changed for the New 52 to Shazam, which was the name of the wizard who gave Billy his powers and the phrase he shouted out to use them. We’re certain there is some joke about that situation to be made.
In addition to his work with Marvel Studios, Hounsou has also appeared in Wayward Pines, King Arthur: Legends of the Sword, Serenity, and The Tempest. He also voiced Black Panther/T’Challa in the BET animated series.
Shazam! hits theatres April 5th, 2019.
