In November 2016, the long-awaited return of Gilmore Girls premiered on Netflix with Gilmore Girls: A Year In The Life. Picking up nearly ten years after the series ended, the show left fans both new and old with a lot of questions.
After leaving the show after its sixth season in 2006, creator Amy Sherman-Palladino used the revival to end the series the way she had always intended for it to conclude. The question that was set in motion with the revival finale in 2016 has since resurfaced: Will there be a second Gilmore Girls revival?
Netflix is keeping things pretty tight-lipped, but it sounds like maybe they’re interested. At the Television Critics Association, Cindy Holland—Netflix’s VP of Original Content—said, “We haven’t discussed it at all. But [series creator Amy Sherman-Palladino] knows that we are very big fans of Gilmore Girls.”
Holland’s comment has inspired an extra bit of hopefulness in seeing the series return in the future.
Although there is nothing official at this point, there have been rumblings over the past two years. For instance, in March 2017, Netflix’s Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos confirmed to TVLine that he had talked with Amy Sherman-Palladino about a second revival.
He said, “We hope [it happens.]” Discussing the success of the revival and its popularity amongst dedicated fans, Sarandos hinted at the possibility of a sequel to A Year in the Life.
Although Sherman-Palladino is very busy with Amazon Studio’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, a show that has garnered 14 Emmy nominations. The streaming service offered her an “out clause” in case the stars aligned for a return to Stars Hollow. While there have been no negotiations at this point and rumors are still milling, the sudden burst of information does prompt some attention and curiosity.
We were last left with Rory (Alexis Bledel) sharing the news about her pregnancy with Lorelai (Lauren Graham), and Lorelai and Luke (Scott Patterson) finally taking a walk down the aisle. Maybe a return to Stars Hollow will offer some closure for fans.
At this time, however, we’re still waiting to see if there’s a promising possibility in the making.
