When The Walking Dead returns this fall, it will be returning with a heavy heart for most as the one of the show’s main leads, Andrew Lincoln, will be leaving at the end of this season. Lincoln will be walking away from an almost 10 year run on the hit AMC drama series after the show’s ninth season.
Lincoln confirmed the news during the show’s panel at San Diego Comic Con and while the news has had fans in a tizzy and the producers of the show processing the upcoming departure, Lincoln has a pretty good reason for walking away after nine seasons. The actor recently spoke out about his exit and clarified why it is time for him to say goodbye.
“I have two young children, and I live in a different country, and they become less portable as they get older,” Lincoln said. “It was that simple. It was time for me to come home.” Lincoln shared that he is definitely looking forward to spending more time with his wife and two children. Shooting in Georgia-centric locations has made things rather difficult for him as far as being able to be with his family and seeing them frequently as they live in England.
The news of his exit has hit the remaining cast kind of hard but they understand and know that his absence will be felt. “Andy has always been the guy, and the show is going to miss him, we’re going to miss him. It’s going to be a different vibe, there’s no replacing him,” Jeffrey Dean Morgan said. “He’s the first call I get when I wake up. He calls me, we talk about the day as we’re driving to work, we get to work, talk about the day, at lunch he’s in my trailer, and then we wrap and he calls me on the way home. It’s been like that every day,” Norman Reedus shared.
As a testament to his importance to the show and the bond the cast and crew share, Lincoln received a standing O at Comic Con after revealing that he was leaving after the upcoming season and only had the best things to say about his exit. “I love this show. It means everything to me. I love the people who make this show,” Lincoln said.
It will be interesting to see how the show will go on without Andrew Lincoln. Rick Grimes has been there from the beginning, and it will be a huge hole to fill if they ever try to fill it at all.
The Walking Dead returns on October 7 on AMC.
