Fans still in shock at the unexpected cancellation of Freeform’s hit fantasy series Shadowhunters received some welcome news yesterday. No not that the series had been saved (though that would be very welcome news), but that the series finale is going to kick-ass and be the perfect send off leaving us all “deeply satisfied”.
Earlier this month Freeform announced that the series would end following the second half of its third season (set to return with 12 episodes in 2019). While this caused some surprise and concern among fans that the series would be left incomplete, Freeform then announced that in addition to the 12 episodes, a special two-episode finale was also ordered to give the series a proper wrap-up.
Although some fear that fans have still be shortchanged with the series and that it will be difficult to tie up the series in a fitting way in only two episodes, having these two episodes and having the chance to actually complete the series is a lot better than leaving it on a cliffhanger or with a sense of unfinished business. There was further hope for just how the series will wrap when executive producer Todd Slavkin took to Twitter yesterday to reassure fans that the series and the series finale is in safe hands.
It’s not rushed. Not at all. It’s beautiful. Thanks to the brilliant @ShadowhuntersWR if has to end like this, you all will be deeply satisfied #malec #clace #sizzy #shadowhunters https://t.co/e8fIpZ3Uhd

Shadowhunters’ cancellation came as a surprise to many given that it was well received and had a strong fan base. This was something that Freeform did not deny with EVP of Programming and Development, Karey Burke stating that the network executives were” very happy creatively” with the series and that its cancellation was purely for economic reasons. “We went back and forth with them but ultimately we just couldn’t make the economics work,” she said. “We were very happy creatively with it. They delivered what the fans wanted. I remember being at Comic-Con and seeing the excitement for the show and thinking, ‘This could be our Supernatural.'”
Shadowhunters will return to Freeform in the US and on Netflix in the UK and Australia in 2019.
