Bumblebee Trailer Sends The Transformers Franchise To The 80s

The Transformers franchise is a bit of a mixed bag. The timeline is weird, the jokes can be crude (or racist), and the connectivity of the stories is…odd at best. Critics don’t like and audiences reception has been lukewarm with the last film. With the last couple of films, the franchise has ended up feeling a bit soulless for lack of a better word.

Honestly, maybe the best thing to do is just kind of wipe the slate clean.

It looks like the franchise has done it with its first spin-off, Bumblebee. Taking place 20 years before the events of 2007’s Transformers, the film will showcase the previous adventures of the titular Transformer as the scout takes refuge in a small California beach town and meets Charlie Watson (Hailee Steinfeld).

The film also stars John Cena as Sector 7 agent Burns. It is the live-action directorial debut for Travis Knight. Knight’s previous film was the Lakia animated picture, Kubo and the Two Strings. God was that movie gorgeous. This is the first film in the Transformer Cinematic Universe not to be directed by Michael Bay.

You can tell that it wasn’t from the trailer.

You know what? Based on this trailer, the film looks like it found the heart of the franchise. There’s definitely something really whimsical and wonderful about it.

Plus? It’s just super amazing to see Bee in his classic G-1 form.

Bumblebee hits theatres December 21st of this year.
